                      Update on Harry

Harry had his surgery today and the procedure went very well.  He is recovering in ICU and will remain at the hospital for a couple of days.  A Lucky Star volunteer works in the cardiology department of the hospital where he is being cared for.  She is keeping a close eye on him.  Thankfully, the procedure is behind him.  If all continues this way, he will be able to live a normal life.
Thank you so very much to all who donated and made this possible.

PLEASE HELP FIX HARRY’S
 BROKEN PUPPY HEART!

Harry is a sweet 12 week old puppy born shortly after his mom came into Lucky Star Cavalier Rescue.  Isn’t he adorable?   But Harry  was recently diagnosed with aPatent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), a common canine congenital heart  defect.  A puppy born with PDA may appear normal for a few weeks, except that it may be the first to tire while playing and the smallest puppy in the litter.  Upon medical exam, there will be a loud, continuous murmur.  Eventually the puppy will develop clinical signs of heart failure.    Harry was just  diagnosed with testing by a cardiac surgeon who recommended that the corrective surgery must  be done within the next few weeks.

When surgery is performed on a young puppy, before significant heart failure develops,  it is over 90% successful.  Harry is scheduled for heart surgery next week.   Because the surgery is being done while he is still a young puppy,  his  chances are excellent for a normal life   But heart surgery is expensive.    Please help us to give Harry the gift of a healthy life.   Even a small donation would be a huge help.     Please  use the PayPal/Credit Card icon on the right hand side of our donation page:  http://www.luckystarcavalierrescue.org/page.php?name=Donations or you may mail a check (note that the gift is for Harry)  to:

Thank you for your generosity!

Darla Update

July 18, 2011

Darla has had surgery for her leg thanks to all your generous donations. Darla’s leg is much straighter and she is able to balance herself better and sit more comfortably. She is now able to run, jump and play with greater ease. During the surgery it was revealed that she had limited muscle in her leg and the malformation was most likely the result of a birth defect. She may never have full use of her leg, but the surgery has given her freedom of movement that she did not have before. She is such a happy, free spirit and nothing gets in her way or slows her down. This is one girl that is truly a lucky star!

What a beautiful sight to see this girl running......a freedom and feeling she has never before experienced!

Thank you so much for giving her this wonderful gift!

Darla Needs Your Help

Darling Darla was found as a stray in Southwest OK. She had been abandoned and left to fend for herself.  As you can see, her hind leg has limited mobility which is due to a leg injury believed to be from blunt trauma.  She was scheduled to be euthanized within 48 hours when Lucky Star was contacted by a concerned volunteer.  Darla is only 18 months old and is very malnourished.  She weighed only 9 lbs when rescued and her ideal weight should be almost twice that.  The photos of her hind leg are heart wrenching.  We hope we are able to save that hind leg and give her back some use of it.  Orthopedic surgery is expensive and we need some help with her expenses.
If you can find it in your heart to donate any amount to her medical care, she would be most appreciative. Donations can be made through PayPal (www.paypal.com), just select our account luckycavaliers@aol.com and notate the donation is for Darla.
Checks can be mailed to :

Thank you for your kindness

Mill Raid

Marshall County, TN, February 2, 2011

http://www.humanesociety.org/news/press_releases/2011/02/tennessee_puppy_mill_rescue_020211.html

The Humane Society of the US confiscated nearly 100 dogs from a kennel in Marshall County, TN on Wednesday, February 2, 2011.  Lucky Star will be taking responsibility for all of the Cavaliers from this raid.  The Humane Society has asked that the public do not make calls to the HSUS and do not come to the triage site.  Please work through the rescues.  The HSUS will post on their site the organizations to contact after all of the breeds have been distributed.

If you are in TN and would like to help Lucky Star with transporting dogs, please complete the transport information on our site and provide details of your availability.  Transport help is needed on Saturday, Feb. 5, from the triage site (located south of Nashville) east to Knoxville to a veterinary clinic.  Other transports are being organized through KY to IN and north to OH.  The need will all depend on the number of dogs and those details will be unfolding today as the HSUS relays it to us.  Lucky Star President, Toni Webb, will be at the triage site to organize the pick up of Cavaliers with the volunteers we have had contact with.    Please e-mail our web site with details of your availability, location and how far you can travel or contact Mary Coyne at mary401339@aol.com.  We will be requesting references from new volunteers.  If you are already in our database, please contact us that you’re available.

We will not be providing details of individual dogs at this time.  The first step is to pick up the dogs and get them veterinary care.  We appreciate your patience with this.  Dogs will be posted when they are available for adoption so complete an adoption application on our web site if you are interested or a foster application to help us after they have completed their veterinary care.

As always, we are very, very grateful to you all for your support and for making it possible for Lucky Star to be able to respond on short notice to a high volume situation like this.

This is an HSUS photo from the site.  Isn’t this just like a Cavalier to lick the face of its rescuer?  That’s why we love this breed so much.  No matter what they do, they cannot ruin the wonderful, loving temperament of these dogs.  This dog just knows that life gets better from here.
